General Summary

Do you want to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those who have served our country? As a Veterans Benefits Counselor I, you’ll work directly with veterans and their families to ensure they receive the benefits and resources they have earned. From guiding them through the claims process to interpreting changes in legislation, you’ll serve as a trusted advocate and advisor, helping veterans navigate complex systems with care and respect. This role offers the opportunity to combine knowledge, compassion, and problem-solving skills to provide life-changing support.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Counsel veterans and their dependents to identify and access federal, state, local, and private benefits.
  • Prepare, present, and support claims on behalf of veterans in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Research, interpret, and apply changes in veterans’ laws, ensuring clients receive up-to-date information and guidance.
  • Review medical and disability documentation and provide recommendations for claims and appeals with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies.

Required Minimum Qualifications

At the time off application, applicants must:

 

  1. a. Possess an Associate's degree or sixty (60) semester credit hours from an accredited college with a major in Sociology, Psychology, Business Administration or closely related field;
    AND
    b. Have two (2) years full-time work experience providing counseling in a public setting;

    OR

  2. Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Sociology, Psychology, Business Administration or closely related field.

    NOTE: Applicants possessing transcripts from a college or university outside of the United States will be required to provide documentation of degree equivalency from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (http://naces.org/members.html). The degree evaluation will be required for application processing.

  3. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for this classification.

  4. Successfully complete the six month probationary period.
