Under limited direction, represent Oakland County in civil law matters and act as counsel for County administrators and elected officials. Review legal documents and conduct legal research and writing. May develop and prosecute complex cases initiated by the County and/or defend the County in complex civil suits brought against it. May draft, review and negotiate complex contracts between the County and third-parties. Utilize current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
What You’ll Do:
Represent County departments before the Personnel Appeal Board, including reviewing disciplinary actions, interviewing supervisors and witnesses, and preparing them for testimony. You’ll take the lead in formulating and presenting the County’s case.
Advocate for the County in cases in state and federal court proceedings before the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, handling highly complex civil rights and discrimination cases. This includes investigating complaints, researching legal precedent, preparing witnesses, and presenting strong, persuasive cases on behalf of the County.

What You’ll need:
1. Possess a Bachelor of Law or a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited college of law.
2. Have had at least six (6) years of full-time work experience in the practice of law, including such areas as real estate transactions, tort defense, auto defense, local government taxation, workers’ compensation, employment law, contracts, leases, insurance law, trial and/or appellate work, and legal issues regarding government duties, responsibilities, immunities, and privileges.
3. Be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan.
4. Pass the complete examination, including the employment physical established for this classification.
5. Successfully complete the six-month probationary period.
Must remain in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan.
