General Summary

An Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Deputy II performs as a lead worker in Corrections or Court Services/Satellite Division. If assigned to Law Enforcement Services performs various law enforcement duties, depending on the divisional assignment, as described below. General law enforcement duties, regardless of assignment, including making criminal arrests and physically restraining individuals, when necessary. Shift assignments include some weekend work. Work shifts may be day, afternoon, midnight, or such special hours as required by a particular assignment to ensure the smooth running of Sheriff’s Office operations. A Deputy II may perform the duties of Deputy I, as required. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

Required Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(WHEN OPENED AS A PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION)

  1. a. Have Merit System status as a Deputy I.
    b. Have successfully completed police academy training or its equivalent (as required by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and be currently licensed as a police officer; OR
  2.  a. Have Merit System status as a Dispatch Specialist.
    b. Have three (3) years full-time work experience as a Dispatch Specialist with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
    c. Have successfully completed police academy training or its equivalent (as required by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and be currently licensed as a police officer.
    NOTE: If not MCOLES licensed must possess MCOLES current passing written and physical pre-test scores to be placed on the eligible list. If selected for promotion will be placed into the next available Police Academy. Upon successful completion of the academy will be promoted to Deputy II.
  3. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license.

 

(WHEN OPENED AS AN OPEN COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION FOR PATROL SERVICES)

  1.  Must be a United States citizen.
  2.  Possess current MCOLES license OR be currently attending a Police Academy training or its equivalent (as required by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).NOTE: Must be MCOLES licensed or eligible to be licensed before the date of hire.
  3.  Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license.
  4. Have no prior felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine qualifying status. Domestic violence convictions are basis for automatically disqualifying.
  5. Have at least corrected 20/20 vision in each eye, have normal color vision and depth perception in both eyes.

Special Requirements

1. Must maintain a valid State of Michigan motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license, firearms qualification and deputization status.


2. Must be MCOLES licensed or eligible to be licensed before the date of hire.

3. A background investigation will be conducted covering an evaluation of employment, school, home, criminal, military, or other personal records. Any conviction or convictions for moving traffic violations, accidents, non-moving traffic violations, or violations of other laws will be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office before an applicant can be appointed. Information obtained during the background investigation will be considered in the hiring decision. Convictions of the Domestic Violence Statute will be a disqualifying factor.


4. A psychological exam will be conducted. This information will be reviewed by the Human Resources department before an applicant can be appointed. Information obtained during the psychological examination will be considered in the hiring decision.

Pay Range

USD $64,519.00 - USD $87,796.00 /Yr.
