As a trainee of the Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center will be responsible for studying Michigan's animal related laws, regulations, ordinances, and court cases. Job shadow staff at the shelter to learn the scope of work performed. Interact with shelter veterinarians and licensed veterinarian technicians, to learn about shelter animal concerns and care, shelter, medicine, humane euthanasia, sedation, and other issues related to animal care. Job shadow Oakland County Animal Control Officers as they respond to citizen calls, perform shelter and vehicle biosecurity, follow up on dog and kennel licenses, issue citations and take in owner surrendered animals and strays running at large. May be assigned to spend time with local law enforcement and local prosecutors to learn about warrants, prosecutions, chain of custody, case preparation, evidence handling and other law enforcement duties and procedures. The purpose of this position is to prepare individuals to meet the requirements of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) to become an Animal Control Officer in the State of Michigan. Only individuals who successfully complete the required training hours, receive a certificate from MDARD acknowledging completion of the 100 hours, pass a background check for deputization by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office and are eligible to obtain a permit to carry a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) will be considered for promotion to the position of Animal Control Officer. All requirements must be met within 6 months of hiring.
