General Summary

Under limited supervision, patrols service areas as well as contracted areas of the County for stray or unlicensed animals, impounds animals, investigates animal bites, anti-cruelty and other animal related complaints, and issues animal ordinance violation citations. Euthanizes ill and injured animals, collects fees as authorized for animal licenses and maintains activity logs. As a Special Deputy is authorized to carry a gun, make arrests and conduct search and seizures under the State Animal Control laws. Shift assignments include weekend and holiday work and relief work on various shifts. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

Required Minimum Qualifications

At the time of application, all applicants must:

  1. Must be at least 18 years old and be a United States Citizen.
    (In compliance with Michigan Compiled Laws 28.426, 4/1/1996).

  2. Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development (G.E.D.) Test.

  3. Per MCL 287.289b (Michigan Compiled Laws) must:
    1. Have successfully completed 100 hours of training approved by the Michigan Department of Agriculture; 
      OR
    2. Possess current certification as a Police Officer per the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES)
      OR
    3. Have proof of employment as an Animal Control Officer at least three years prior to 1973.

  4. Have no felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis to determine qualifying status. (Criminal Law generally includes all offenses except traffic laws, conservation law and liquor law. In general, conviction for a violation of criminal law is automatically disqualifying).

  5. Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Out of Country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’s license before the hire date.

  6. Possess a permit to carry a Concealed Pistol License (CPL).

    NOTE: Employees without the required CPL at the time of application must obtain it by the end of the six-month probationary period, at the employee’s expense.

  7. Pass the complete examination, including the employment physical required for this classification.

  8. Successfully complete the six month probationary period.

Special Requirements

  1. Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license

  2. Must maintain official special deputy status and must pass a background check by the Sheriff’s Department.

  3. Must maintain a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) as specified under the required minimum qualifications.
